StyleArchitecture Documentary Zen Minimalist Landscape
SubjectsGiant torii gate entrance, sake barrel wall, forested shrine approach, wedding ceremonies in kimono, iris garden, Kiyomasa's Well, ceremonial lanterns
Best timePre-dawn; Early morning golden hour
Lenses
24mmThe towering torii entrance and sake barrel walls; the forested gravel approach with canopy converging overhead in morning light
90mm MacroCalligraphy detail on individual sake barrels; kimono and floral decoration at weekend wedding ceremonies
iPhoneDramatic upward angle inside the forested avenue; wide sake barrel alcove capturing both walls of barrels in a single frame
NotesArrive at opening (sunrise, ~5am in summer) to photograph the forested approach before tour groups arrive — the gravel path and overhanging trees are exceptional in slanted early light. Tripods are not permitted at Kiyomasa's Well (inner garden); brace against a post or use the surrounding wooden railing for longer exposures. Weekend mornings frequently feature Shinto wedding processions on the inner precinct — stay respectful and shoot quietly from a distance. The iris garden inside Meiji Gyoen peaks mid-June and is a separate paid area worth the detour.

Best timeDusk / Blue hour; Evening 18:00–21:00 for peak crossing crowds
Lenses
24mmGround-level scramble from the crossing itself at f/1.4; Shinjuku neon alleyway atmosphere with figures as silhouettes
90mm MacroCompressed crowd from the Magnet by Shibuya 109 rooftop; long-exposure light trail compression looking down the crossing
iPhoneThe Starbucks / Tsutaya window overhead view of the full scramble; wide Shinjuku neon façade fitting the entire neon canyon in frame
NotesThe Tsutaya Starbucks (above the Scramble) and the Magnet by Shibuya 109 rooftop (level 8, entry fee) are the two key elevated viewpoints — both give you the crossing from above but from different angles. Blue hour (30 minutes after sunset) is the sweet spot: natural sky colour still balances the neon, and the crossing reaches its evening peak. For Sony, shoot wide open at f/1.4 and raise ISO rather than using a tripod on the street; for long exposures use the rooftop railing as a brace. Weekday evenings are busier than weekends.

90mm MacroCompressed Kishamichi Promenade skyline; architectural detail of the Red Brick Warehouse ironwork at dusk
iPhoneBankoku Bridge reflection compressing the inverted Minato Mirai skyline symmetrically on the river surface
NotesBankoku Bridge is the standout composition — at night the still river creates a near-perfect skyline reflection; arrive at blue hour when sky and lights are balanced. The Rinko Park lawn promenade (free access) is the widest unobstructed waterfront angle. For long exposure on the Sony, use the Rinko Park railing or ground as a brace — tripods are viable here in open public space. The Yokohama Landmark Tower Sky Garden observation deck (69F) gives an aerial perspective if you want the classic elevated view.

Daio Wasabi Farm — Azumino
Nagano
TypeAgricultural / Rural Heritage
StyleLandscape Abstract Pattern Documentary
SubjectsGeometric wasabi beds in flowing water channels, historic Kurosawa film watermills (thatched), Tate River reflections, wasabi blossoms in spring, alpine rural landscape, farm channels and bridges

24mmWide rows of wasabi beds and the surrounding alpine landscape; the thatched Kurosawa watermills framed in their riverside context
90mm MacroClose detail of individual wasabi plant texture and flowing water in the channels; tight crop of thatched mill structure
iPhoneThe geometric grid of wasabi rows from a raised bridge or embankment, emphasising the pattern of channels and plants
NotesThe wasabi beds photograph best from the small bridges crossing the channels — get low to align the rows of plants as leading lines into the frame. The Kurosawa watermills (built for Akira Kurosawa's 1990 film Dreams) stand on the Tate River bank and shoot beautifully at dawn in mist. Spring blossom (mid-March to April) adds delicate white flowers to the green beds. The farm is open 9am–5pm; mornings weekdays are quiet. From Matsumoto, 30 min by JR Oito Line to Hotaka Station.

Dotonbori & Shinsaibashi — Osaka
Osaka
TypeUrban / Night / Street
StyleStreet Long Exp Documentary Abstract Pattern
SubjectsGlico Running Man neon sign, Dotonbori canal neon reflections, Ebisubashi Bridge crowds, giant mechanical restaurant signs (crab, blowfish), Hozenji Yokocho lantern alley, long-exposure canal light trails
Best timeDusk / Blue hour; Night 20:00 onwards for full neon
Lenses
24mmGround-level canal reflections wide open at f/1.4 for ambient-light handheld shots; Ebisubashi Bridge crowd scenes with neon glow
90mm MacroThe Glico Man sign isolated from the bridge; compressed neon reflections on the canal water as a layered abstract
iPhoneCanal surface reflection from Ebisubashi, compressing the neon canyon into a ribbon of colour on the water
iPhoneUpward shot of giant mechanical restaurant signs; wide canal panorama fitting both neon-lit banks into one frame
NotesShoot from Ebisubashi Bridge facing east for the Glico sign; brace on the railing for longer exposures. Blue hour (30–45 min post-sunset) balances residual sky with the neon for the most vivid canal reflection. Hozenji Yokocho — the narrow moss-covered lantern alley one block back — is the antidote to Dotonbori's chaos and photographs beautifully at 24mm. ND filters help smooth the canal surface for long-exposure reflection shots; otherwise use the Sony 90mm compressed view from the bridge at ISO 1600.

Best timeDusk / Blue hour; early evening when lanterns glow
Lenses
24mmHanamikoji's lantern-lined street at f/1.4 in last light; teahouse facades in evening atmosphere with the street as a leading line
90mm MacroKōshi lattice woodwork and noren textile details on ochaya fronts; lantern texture close-up
iPhoneCompressing the Shirakawa canal from a bridge, layering willow reflections, canal lights and ochaya façades in a single compressed frame
NotesPhotography is permitted on public streets (Hanamikoji, Shirakawa-dori) but banned on private side-streets, with a ¥10,000 fine enforced. Never photograph, follow, or approach geiko or maiko without explicit permission — aggressive 'geisha paparazzi' behaviour has already triggered stricter controls. The Shirakawa canal is best at blue hour when bridge lanterns and building lights reflect cleanly on still water. Arrive before 18:00 to scout before the narrow lanes become too dark; the Sony 24mm at f/1.4 and ISO 3200 handles low-light streets without flash.

NotesArrive by 7 AM for calm deer and soft morning light on the temple; avoid midday crowds (11 AM–2 PM). Flash and tripods are prohibited in the Great Buddha Hall interior, but the grounds and exterior are unrestricted. Late afternoon golden hour rewards patience as crowds thin and warm light transforms both temple and deer.

Photograph exteriors and gardens only; interior temple shots are prohibited.

Okayama Korakuen Garden
Okayama
TypeJapanese Landscape Garden
StyleLandscape Reflection Zen Minimalist Garden
SubjectsKayo-no-ike Pond reflections, cherry blossom tunnel (spring), iris flowerbeds (summer), autumn maple foliage, Okayama Castle borrowed scenery, traditional teahouses, manicured lawn and crane enclosure

Lenses
24mmWide garden compositions including Okayama Castle as borrowed scenery in the background; the spring cherry blossom tunnel along the horse track
90mm MacroIris and lotus macro detail at peak summer bloom; individual autumn maple leaves and their colour
iPhoneKayo-no-ike Pond reflection compressing the teahouse or castle tower onto the calm water surface
NotesStart at the pond early to catch the mirror reflection of Okayama Castle before the surface is disturbed by wind or ducks. The garden rewards slow movement — walking the perimeter path anti-clockwise reveals borrowed-scenery compositions the main route misses. Tripods are not explicitly banned but are discouraged when tour groups pass; morning weekday visits are easiest. Pairing Korakuen (morning) with Okayama Castle (afternoon) works well as they are within walking distance of each other.
Tomonoura — Historic Fishing Harbour
Hiroshima
TypeHistoric Fishing Harbour
StyleDocumentary Architecture Landscape Street
SubjectsJōyatō lighthouse at harbour tip, crescent bay panorama from hillside viewpoint, traditional wooden fishing boats, century-old wooden shopfronts, Fukuzenji temple sea view veranda, rustic harbour alleys
Best timeGolden hour (morning and evening); Dusk / Blue hour for harbour lights
Lenses
24mmThe crescent harbour panorama from the hillside viewpoint where the castle once stood; wide townscape with Seto Inland Sea backdrop
90mm MacroThe Jōyatō lighthouse isolated against sea and sky; weathered wood grain and fishing nets on the harbour buildings
iPhoneThe long eastern pier looking back to compress the town, lighthouse and fishing boats into a layered harbour scene
NotesThe hilltop viewpoint (former castle site) is the definitive wide shot of the crescent bay — climb via the stone steps from the harbour and arrive before golden hour to choose your composition. The Fukuzenji temple tatami veranda frames the sea and two islands (Bentenjima, Sensujima) in a classic shōji-window composition. The harbour alleys are best at dawn before tour coaches arrive; the town can be walked in under an hour. Access: 30 min bus from Fukuyama Station (¥580).

The aluminum-rich groundwater and sun angle create the surreal turquoise—weather and season shift the tone from bright cyan to greenish-gray to frozen white. Tripods are permitted; wind-calm days yield mirror-like surfaces ideal for long exposures.
